This page contains the definitions of Scientific words that relates to The Nitrogen Cycle :)

Nitrogen Fixation: The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen compounds by certain bacteria, such as Rhizobium in the root nodules of legumes.

Mineralization: The fossilization of buried plant and animal matter as the organic parts are replaced by other minerals.

Nitrification: The chemical process in which a nitro group is added to an organic compound (or substituted for another group in an organic compound). The oxidation of ammonium compounds in dead organic material into nitrates and nitrites by soil bacteria (making nitrogen available to plants). The conversion of [[ nitrogen from inorganic to organic by [[nitrate bacteria, which effectively recycles the substance so that it can be used again by plants via [[root uptake.

Denitrification: The conversion of nitrates into nitrogen gas which is then released into the atmosphere. This is caused by bacteria and how they obtain their energy. A small amount is converted to usable forms by lightning in a process called atmospheric nitrogen fixation.

Assimilation:  The conversion of inorganic nitrogen (such as nitrate) into an organic form of nitrogen like, for example, an amino acid. Nitrate is reduced for this purpose by enzymes first to nitrite (by nitrate reductase), then to ammonia (by nitrite reductase).
